Long Preston Heritage Group Events

On Sunday 20th October 2019 we invite you to an exhibition about the project to record the information on the gravestones in St Mary’s Churchyard and to explore the family histories associated with them. . It will be in Long Preston Village Hall from 11am until 4pm and refreshments will be available, free of charge.

There will be examples of amazingly enhanced photographs of some of the deteriorating gravestones and an opportunity to find out more about the history of local families. Because it is such an old churchyard there are many gravestones needing to be recorded so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in different parts of this project.

We would also value any information that can be provided on local families.

LPHG’s AGM will be on Monday 21st October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

This will be followed by a talk by Sarah Lister about the Settle project to safeguard the gravestones and develop the history of families buried in the graveyard of Settle Parish Church.

Stories in Stone

Stories in Stone, linked to the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, have asked LPHG to  advertise events, some of which have passed.  Apparently it has been difficult getting this information out.

One of these events is  the opportunity to join Dr David Johnson on a guided tour of Thorns, especially that there is only permission to fully access the site 3 more times since the excavation has finished.

Please click here for more details of the events.    ‘

On November 11, Long Preston together with the rest of the country  commemorated the end of World War 1.  The report and photographs are now available in the Village Galleries section of this website.

The group currently has 2 ongoing projects which are detailed under 'Current Projects':  Archiving and one connected to St Mary’s Church.  See above for additional information about the Church Project.
